Stone Town ("city of stone"), also known as Mji Mkongwe ("old city" in Swahili), is the old part of the capital of Zanzibar on the west coast of Unguja. Once the capital of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, then a colonial administrative centre during the British occupation — today the seat of the government of the semi-autonomous state of Zanzibar. One of the most historically important cities in East Africa.
Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European architectural elements are found throughout its streets. Due to its historical importance and architecture, the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the birthplace of the legend Freddie Mercury — a museum was inaugurated in the house where he was born in 2019.
