Jozani Forest became a protected natural area in 1960. The park is home to approximately 500 Zanzibar red colobus monkeys — an endemic species found nowhere else in the world — as well as white-throated vervet primates.
Among the mammals documented are the Ader's duiker (an endangered small antelope), the suni (Neotragus moschatus), and the servaline genet of Zanzibar — a small and elusive viverrid carnivore whose presence has been documented thanks to photographic traps.
